Spanglish books

We love baby books and have a lot of them for the Little Monkey. Some of them are in English, some in Spanish, but we especially enjoy the bilingual ones. I know, most baby books have such simple texts that you can read them in English, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese (if you happen to know the words!). 

But when we look for bilingual books we look for the ones with an actual story. Those books that are able to keep the kid's attention from cover to cover. Did I make it clear that we really really love books like this? And you know what? The price is the same as the one-language version of the same book. So, Papa Monkey reads them in English and Mama Monkey in Spanish. Or at least the first time, because the Little Monkey just entered the phase where he wants us to repeat everything over and over. So, often, we read it in one language, then the other one, then the first one again, and the second one, and... Yes, we end up reading it in made up Chinese!  

The Little Monkey's favorite is a classic: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. To be honest, it's my favorite, too. But he also loves the ones that we have about... Can you guess it? Monkeys!

We have a big, beautiful family that has given us many of the books that we have. But when we buy them, we go online (Book depository, Amazon, etc. etc.) or to big bookstores. 

In Portland we are very lucky. We have a gem: Powell's City of Books, which claims to be 'the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world'. As to the validity of the claim, I don't know, but it is huge! An entire building dedicated to books, with several floors and maps to find the right section (if you are curious, learn about it here). We all love going, searching, sitting, reading, and choosing the books together, it is an experience in and of itself! Let me tell you, their bilingual baby book section is very impressive. 

For us, books are extremely important tools and the Little Monkey always has access to them. They teach, they are fun, and he spends hours and hours handling them, many times on his own! And if you ever babysat a one-year-old in your life, you'll know that's handy, very handy!

Nos encantan los libros para bebés y tenemos un montón para el pequeño. Algunos son en inglés, otros en español, pero a nosotros nos gustan especialmente los libros bilingües. Lo sé, la mayoría de los libros para bebés tienen unos textos tan simples que los puedes traducir sobre la marcha y leerlos en inglés, español o chino mandarín (si sabes hablarlo, claro).

Pero cuando buscamos libros bilingües buscamos libros con historia; esos libros capaces de captar la atención del niño de principio a fin. ¿He dejado claro que nos superencantan este tipo de libros? Y, ¿sabes qué? Cuestan lo mismo que la versión del mismo libro en sólo un idioma. Papá Monkey los lee en inglés y Mamá Monkey en español. Bueno, al menos la primera vez, porque el pequeñín acaba de entrar en esa etapa en la que quiere que le repitamos todo una y otra vez. Así que, a menudo, lo leemos en un idioma, luego en el otro, luego, en el primero, luego en el segundo, y... Sí, ¡al final se lo leemos en chino inventado! 

El favorito del bebé es todo un clásico: La oruguita glotona, de Eric Carle. La verdad es que es mi favorito también. Pero también le gustan mucho los que tenemos de... ¿Lo adivinas? ¡De "monetes"!

Tenemos una familia muy grande y genial que nos ha regalado muchos de los libros que tenemos. Pero cuando los compramos, acudimos a la red (Book depository, Amazon, etc. etc.) o a librerías grandes. 

En Portland, somos muy afortunados. Tenemos una joya: Powell's city of books, que dice ser "la librería independiente de libros nuevos y usados del mundo". No sé es la más grande o no, ¡pero la verdad es que es enorme! Un edificio entero dedicado a los libros, con varias plantas y hasta mapas para encontrar la sección que buscas (si tienes curiosidad, lee más aquí). Nos encanta ir, buscar, sentarnos, leer y elegir libros juntos. Es toda una experiencia. Su sección de libros bilingües para bebé es impresionante.

Para nosotros, los libros son una herramienta muy importante y el bebé siempre tiene acceso a ellos. Enseñan, son divertidos y él se pasa horas y horas manejándolos, ¡a veces él solito! Y, si alguna vez has cuidado de un bebé de un año, sabrás que esto es bueno, ¡muy bueno!
