ABC Flashcards {Free Printable}

Ever since we started buying ABC's cookies (a type of cookies very popular in the USA), the toddler showed interest in learning the letters. We would give him a couple of cookies and tell him: 'Look Monkey, this is a B for boat and a C for car'. And even though he is not even two right now, he happens to recognize quite a few letters. It's clearly too early to go any further, but he loves learning things and showing off in front of friends and family. He is such a character!

It also helped to have a little toy laptop and a toy tablet that Situ (Arabic for grandma) gave him, which teaches the letters, and one of his favorite books: Portland ABC's by John Skewes (a book from the 'Larry gets lost' series).

The problem came when he actually started relating the letter to the word that we told him. Ok, he first learned the letter M (obviously) for monkey/mono and it worked. But, in general, the Spanish and the English words don't start with the same letter. So, if Mama Monkey said: 'Esta es la P, de plátano'. He, afterwards, with his mouth stuffed with cookies, would grab a P and shout: 'Banana!' 

Thus, we started thinking of objects that he knows and that have the same inicial in both English and Spanish. And what objects does a toddler know best? His toys, of course! We have had a blast creating these Spanglish Alphabet Flashcards, originally for the little Monkeys, and now for all of you. Desde que empezamos a comprar galletitas del abecedario (un tipo de galletas muy popular en los EEUU), el monete mayor mostraba interés por aprenderse las letras. Le dábamos un par de galletas y le decíamos: "Mira, monete, esta es la B de barco y esta la C de coche". Y, a pesar de que no ha cumplido los dos años, ya se sabe bastantes letras. Está claro que es muy pronto para ir más allá de eso, pero a él le encanta aprender cosas para hacerse el "chulito" delante de las visitas. Tiene una personalidad...

También ayudaron un portátil y una tablet de juguete que le regaló Situ (abuela en árabe) que enseñan el abecedario y uno de sus libro favoritos: Portland ABC's de John Skewes (un libro de la serie 'Larry gets lost').

El caso es que cuando empezó a relacionar la letra con las palabras, se armó un follón. Vale, primero se aprendió la M de mono/monkey (cómo no). Pero, en general, ésto no pasa y la misma palabra no empieza por la misma letra en inglés y en castellano. Así que Mamá Monkey le decía: "Esta es la P, de plátano" y luego él, poniéndose morado de galletas, encontraba una P y gritaba: "¡Banana!"

Por eso, empezamos a pensar objetos que él conoce y que empiezan con la misma letra en inglés y en castellano. ¿Y qué objeto conoce mejor un bebé? Pues, ¡sus juguetes!
