Not-so-terrible Twos

Last week the eldest Little Monkey turned two. Two-year-olds can be a very challenging as I'm sure you know. They are extremely cute, but have big emotions that often cannot be managed very well. They want to be independent, but they still need us so much... For these and many other reasons, this age is often called the 'terrible twos'.

However, for parents raising bilingual kids, two is a sweet age. Language development really takes off and we start seeing results of our hard work around the little one's second birthday. As we once described it to our blog friend Crecer en Inglés, the first two years of raising a bilingual kids feel like painting in the dark, you cannot really know how it is turning out. But around age two, my friends, you start seeing the light, and it feels incredible!

Also, if it is your first kid, after two years you have gotten used to the 'rules' you have decided to follow in the bilingual adventure. In our case, we are now more consistent and have the rules much more defined than when we started the blog.

We are very happy with the way things are going. Until now, the Little Monkey was able to understand both languages perfectly and follow simple (and not-so-simple) requests. During the last year, like all one-year-olds, he has been learning lots of words. Some were in English, some in Spanish, some were a mix, but most were in 'Monkish'. Yes, he has been very verbal since he started talking, but many words he used were totally made up, like 'bop' for crayons or 'tee-tee' for moon.

But lately he has started talking more and more and he discerns when to use English or Spanish based on the language of the question. When he started answering 'yes' or 'sí' depending on what language, we used we knew we were on the right track. And like that, more and more things everyday. The process is just amazing. 

We know the way is long and it has just started, but we will keep going and adapting to the new circunstancies that may occur. In the meantime, Happy Second birthday Little Monkey! We love you to the 'tee-tee' and back!

La semana pasada el Monete mayor cumplió dos añitos. Como seguro que sabéis, los dos años son todo un desafío. Los nenes de dos años son super ricos, pero tienen grandes emociones y, a menudo, no las saben gestionar bien. Quieren ser independientes, pero aún nos necesitan tanto... Por esta y otras razones, por estas tierras, a esta edad le llaman los "terribles dos". 

Sin embargo, para los padres criando niños bilingües, los dos años son una edad genial. Cuando se acerca el segundo cumpleaños del pequeño, el desarrollo del lenguaje empieza a acelerarse y empezamos a ver los frutos de nuestro esfuerzos. Como una vez le decía a Alex de nuestro blog amigo Crecer en Inglés, los primeros dos años de crianza de un niño bilingüe son como pintar en la oscuridad, no sabes cómo va a resultar. Pero llegados a este punto, amigos míos, es cuando se empieza a ver la luz, y ¡es increible!

Además, si es vuestro primer niño, a los dos años os habréis acostumbrado a las "reglas" que hayáis decidido seguir en vuestra cruzada bilingüe. En nuestro caso, ahora somos más consistentes y tenemos las reglas mucho más definidas que cuando comenzamos a escribir en el blog.

Estamos super contentos con cómo van las cosas. Hasta ahora, el Monete entendía las dos lenguas perfectamente y también era capaz de seguir instrucciones simples (y no tan simples). En este último año, como todos los niños de un año, ha aprendido muchísimas palabras. Algunas en castellano, otras en ingles, otras una mezcla, pero la mayoría eran en "monkish". Sí, desde que comenzó a hablar no calla, pero muchas de las palabras no sabemos de dónde las ha sacado, como "bop" para las pinturas y "titi" para la luna.

Pero últimamente ha empezado a hablar más y más y distingue cuando tiene que usar inglés o castellano en función del lenguaje en el que se le pregunta. Cuando empezó a responder "sí" o "yes" en función del idioma en la que le hablábamos, supimos que íbamos por el camino correcto. Y, como esto, más y más cada día. El proceso es alucinante.

Sabemos que el camino es largo y que acabamos de comenzar, pero seguiremos adelante y nos adaptaremos a las circunstancias que vayan surgiendo. Mientras tanto... ¡Feliz cumpleaños monete! Te queremos hasta la "titi" y vuelta.
